Rollout QuickStarts - Intranet
NEW! Editing Intranet Pages (iLife 06/08)   Sharing Photos
The introduction of iLife, which includes iWeb, will change the way that we create student and teacher Intranet sites. These notes discuss the adaptation of iWeb for school Intranets.

Examples
Somewhere PS - iWeb Intranet
Example of a school intranet site created using iWeb. Includes a template which you can download to use in your school.

Ellen's Place - Student Example
Example of student intranet site created using iWeb. Includes an e-portfolio projects page, photo album, and a sample podcast.

How to....
iWeb Tutorials
Apple videos give you a guide to getting started with iWeb.

Intranet Pages with iWeb
(pdf - 1.41 Mb)
Using iWeb to create a web site on your OSX Intranet.

On-line Photo Albums with iWeb
(pdf - 1.68Mb)
Using iWeb to publish your photos on the school intranet.

Student e-Portfolios with iWeb
(pdf - 1.5 Mb)
Setup a Projects page to showcase students' projects online. (See Ellen's project page example site).

Publishing a Podcast with iWeb
An introduction to preparing photos, adding sound, and publishing a Podcast on your iWeb intranet site.

On-line Photo Albums with iWeb
(pdf - 1.96Mb)
Using iWeb to publish your photos on your school intranet.

iPhoto Album Sharing
(850k - pdf)
Use iPhoto's built-in sharing option to share photos on your network. (Useful for a temporary sharing arrangement for a few users.)

Sharing Photos on an OSX Intranet
(980k - pdf)
Use iPhoto to create a web page to share photos on your intranet. Students can access these photos through drag'n'drop from a web browser to their documents or folders.

Galerie
The basic iPhoto web export produces web pages which are, well, very basic! Galerie works in conjunction with iPhoto to produce much slicker on-line photo galleries. (Free).

Great for large numbers of photos.

Be sure to check out the Galerie template collections too!

Editing Intranet Pages (Mozilla)   Distributing FireFox Preferences
Note: This info is now mostly redundant, following the introduction of iWeb as part of the iLife suite (above)

Somewhere PS - Example
This is a "model" intranet setup used for schools. If your school doesn't have a similar arrangement already setup, you can download the site to use as a framework for creating your own school intranet.

Editing your School Intranet Site

Editing your schools' main intranet site. Includes details of setting up Mozilla's proxy for the DET network.

Editing Users' Intranet Pages

Step by step introduction to editing the original (pre-2006) students' and teachers' personal Intranet pages using Mozilla Composer.

Creating Student e-Portfolios
(1Mb - pdf)
Step by step introduction to including links to student's online projects on a school intranet, using Mozilla Composer.

Mozilla Preferences
(158k - pdf)
Setting the default preferences for Mozilla Home page and Proxy. Mozilla includes a free web Composer editing module.

In some instances, schools are required to use Firefox (rather than Safari) to access their corporate network.

Unfortunately Firefox does not make use of the Mac OS X settings for Internet access, instead using it's own preferences which are set on a per-user basis.

The notes below describe the process of configuring Firefox preferences for, and distributing them to, mutliple users, either on a local computer, or in an environment using networked Home folders (which is where the Firefox prefs are stored).

Update: The notes below were written for Firefox v1.5.x. The arrangement of the preferences windows in v2.0 has changed, though the settings are still the same. (The proxy settings window is now under Advanced > Network > Settings). New v2.0 info here soon.

FireFox Preferences - Network users
(449k - pdf)
Configuring and distributing default FireFox prefs - for network users.

FireFox Preferences - Local users
(405k - pdf)
Configuring the default FireFox prefs - for "local" (non-network) users.

For DET schools that have been "transitioned" to the Portal, and have lost access to their school intranet site:
DET FireFox Prefs - School Intranet
(491k - pdf)
These notes are for NSW schools who have a local Intranet, but where a DET technician has setup the DET "one-size-fits-all" Firefox prefs, which point every student's default Home page at the DET Portal login window.

These notes describe how to modify and distribute new Firefox prefs that open students (and teachers) home pages at the school Intranet page.
